Cryo-EM Workshop 2023: "I have my data set — Now what?"
Single-particle cryo-EM is a powerful structural technique that allows for the calculation of 3D structures of purified biological specimens. Recent technological developments in microscopes, cameras and computation have led to a “resolution revolution” in the field and it is now routine to determine 3D structures under 3Å resolution.
The focus of this four-day class is to introduce participants to common image processing packages used to analyze cryo-EM data. This is a hands-on class where participants will work with instructors to learn how to independently use common software packages (RELION, cryoSPARC, and cryoDRGN), in addition building models into cryo-EM maps using Coot and Phenix.
A key feature of the course is that participants bring their own data for analysis to get practical processing advice from leading experts in the field. Instruction is geared towards participants with some experience processing cryo-EM data. Participants are expected to bring particle stacks. We will not be covering initial movie alignment, CTF estimation and particle selection steps.
Participant Requirements:
- Laptop computer
- Bring your own cryo-EM dataset for analysis (required)
- Experience collecting cryo-EM data would be helpful
- Micrographs and particle stack(s) from a specific dataset to process
- 3D reconstructions to be used for model building
Who Should Attend
Graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty, staff and non-academics (such as industry) researchers who have cryo-EM experience and at least one cryo-EM dataset for processing are encouraged to apply. Priority will be given to participants who are learning cryo-EM and are actively analyzing datasets.
The application deadline for the 2023 workshop is March 31 at 5:00 p.m. ET. Both the application form and the reference letters are due by that time. Enter your full name as the proposal title. Additional materials required are:
- Curriculum vitae
- One-page justification regarding why your participation in this workshop will help you with your cryo-EM project (we place particular emphasis on applicants who are already analyzing cryo-EM datasets)
- Reference letter from PI and/or head of Lab
