An Abiding Affection for UM Branches Into Science
Joseph and Ellen Goldstein
Joseph Goldstein met his wife Ellen while they were both studying at the UM law library.
“That adds to our affection for UM,” said Joe. “I was studying law, and Ellen was studying for an archeology test. We sat across from each other at the same table. Six months later we were married.”
Joe (JD’72) and Ellen (AB ’70, MEd ’72), longtime UM contributors, have built a relationship with UM that is all in the family. Their children Laura (AB’96) and Paul (AB ’98) are not only alums, but contributors too.
Joe and Ellen saw an opportunity to combine their passion for supporting UM with the new opportunity presented by the scientific alliance with the Life Sciences Institute and the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovet, Israel.
“We recognize the importance of international science collaborations,” said Joe. “Both institutes can make important contributions to advance science. Working together in a substantive partnership creates a greater benefit.”
The Goldsteins not only provided the seed fund for the LSI/Weizmann alliance, but have pledged additional funds to keep the partnership going strong. They hope that their gifts will be matched by other donors who have the same enthusiasm for international science connections including student exchange and faculty collaboration.
The Goldstein connection to UM may continue to grow. Joe is already pegging his granddaughter Abigail as a Wolverine -- class of 2026!
