Molecular Insights into Metabolic Disease
The symposium featured the Mary Sue and Kenneth Coleman Life Sciences Lecture by Dr. Bruce Spiegelman, Professor of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, on the topic, "Transcriptional Control of Systemic Energy Homeostasis." Leading scientists addressed their research in endocrinology and diabetes research, and the symposium featured an introduction by LSI Director and renowned diabetes expert Alan Saltiel.

Cancer Insights: Molecules to Medicine
The symposium featured the Mary Sue and Kenneth Coleman Life Sciences Lecture by Dr. Charles Sherr, co-chair of the Department of Genetics and Tumor Cell Biology at the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and investigator for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, on the topic, "Oncogene Surveillance by Ink4a-Arf." There were also many other prominent scientists discussing breakthrough research in oncology.

Positive Exposure: Spirit of Difference Exhibit - March 28-April 25, 2005
Over the past six years, fashion photographer Rick Guidotti and Diane McLean, MD, PhD, MPH, have photographed and videotaped interviews of hundreds of individuals living with genetic conditions with a central focus on albinism in the United States including American Indian communities, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Canada, Mali, Cameroon, South Africa, French Polynesia, Fiji, Samoa, New Zealand, Australia, Panama, the United Kingdom and France. Their work was featured in this month-long art exhibit, to create a window into the lives of people living with genetic conditions.

Fighting Stigma with Knowledge and Understanding
This national conference, co-sponsored by the Medical School and the Horace Rackham School of Graduate Studies, presented expert speakers from around the world, who discussed the prevalent issue of depression at university settings, along with workshops and panel discussions.
Manya: A Living History of Madame Curie - March 8, 2005
This one-woman play chronicled the life of Marie Curie, the discoverer of radium and radioactivity, the first woman to receive a doctorate in the sciences in Europe, the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize, the first person to receive a second Nobel Prize, and the first woman to teach at the Sorbonne in its 600 year history.

Grand Opening Celebrations - May 12-14, 2004
The distinguished Harvard University biologist Edward O. Wilson, who was named one of Time magazine's 25 most influential people of the 20th century, delivered the keynote address at the Grand Opening Convocation of the Life Sciences Institute, outlining his vision of "Unified Biology and the Future of Life."
The grand opening celebrations also included a student art exhibit on "Life After Sex: Imagining the Genomic Era," as well as an orchestral concert, featuring the Life Sciences Orchestra and hosted by LSI Director Alan Saltiel.
