LSI announces May symposium: Cancer Insights: Molecules to Medicine
April 20, 2005
ANN ARBOR, Mich.---Top cancer researchers from across the country will discuss their latest findings at the Life Sciences Institute's fourth annual symposium: Cancer Insights: Molecules to Medicine on May 12, 2005 .
Dr. Charles Sherr, M.D., Ph.D., of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital will kick off the meeting and is the honorary Mary Sue & Kenneth Coleman Life Sciences Lecturer. Dr. Sherr is recognized for having made major strides towards identifying key factors that regulate cell growth and for his insights into the role of tumor suppressing proteins.
He received the prestigious Landon-AACR Prize for Cancer Research in 2003, is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and has received many other awards and honors. He co-discovered the tumor suppressor gene ARF, which was the first patent awarded for the complete ARF gene.
The full-day program also includes noted cancer researchers: Dr. Allan Balmain, professor, Cancer Research Institute and Biochemistry, University of California San Francisco; Dr. A. Thomas Look, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard; Dr. Barbara Weber, Vice President , Translational Medicine and Genetics, Oncology, GlaxoSmithKline; Dr. Todd Golub, Director, Cancer Program, The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard; Dr. Renata Pasqualini, professor of Medicine and Cancer Biology,University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center; and Charles Sawyers, director of the Prostate Cancer Program, Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of California, Los Angeles.
LSI's annual symposia feature recent developments in areas of interdisciplinary science. They are designed to encourage the exchange of ideas and to provide the opportunity for students and scientists alike to interact with and learn from prominent scientific leaders. This year's topic will explore cancer research from multiple perspectives.
The meeting, which is open to the public, will run from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm in Forum Hall at Palmer Commons on the University of Michigan campus.
University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman and her husband, Kenneth Coleman, made a significant leadership gift in 2004 endowing a variety of efforts across the University. The endowment includes the Mary Sue and Kenneth Coleman Life Sciences Institute Lecture Fund, which was inaugurated in 2004 by Nobel Laureate Peter Agre at the third annual Life Sciences Institute Symposium: "Exploring the Complexity of Life."
The Institute serves as Michigan 's hub for collaborative biomedical research on human health problems.
