October 5, 2004
ANN ARBOR, Mich.---Noted for his brilliant science, Professor Kun-Liang Guan will receive a Faculty Recognition Award from the University of Michigan on October 6, 2004. Guan was one of 29 faculty members selected for awards based upon his substantive contributions to the University through significant achievements in research, publishing, excellence in teaching, advising and mentoring; and his participation in service activities.
Guan has distinguished himself researching biochemical signal transduction, defining the chemical processes whereby hormonal and nutritional signals impinging on the outside of cells are transmitted through the cell membrane to the interior of cell cytoplasm or cell nucleus. The award announcement describes him as "an energetic scientist who constantly produces novel ideas and insights, an effective mentor, and wonderful department citizen who shows great future promise."
Kun-Liang Guan, who began at LSI in October 2003, established himself as a highly productive and independent scholar publishing over 100 peer-reviewed articles, most notably in high-profile journals during his 12 total years at Michigan. He is a sought after speaker and excellent teacher who is deeply involved in both graduate and postgraduate education. He has served on numerous UM committees, NIH and NSF study sections, and as editorial board member for the Journal of Biological Chemistry and Biological Signals and Receptors.
His creativity and farsightedness were recognized by the "genius grant" awarded by the MacArthur Foundaton in 1998, among many other honors and awards.
