IV. Precollege and Outreach
A. University of Michigan Howard Hughes Medical Institute Teaching Fellows. A group of high school and community college teachers ("Current Faculty") will be selected as participants in the UM HHMI Fellows program. UM HHMI Fellows will participate in two distinct but related programs: (1) Life Science Seminar Series, and (2) the Residential Workshop. The Life Science Seminar Series is designed to provide an introduction to current topics in biology through a series of eight lectures presented by University of Michigan faculty members. These lectures have a goal of providing the participants with up-to-date information and exposure to cutting-edge research in the life sciences. The Residential Workshop is an intensive one-week program designed to introduce current faculty to active learning.
B. Bridging Students Internship Program. The UM HHMI Fellows will nominate high school seniors and community college transfer students for this program. These students will participate in summer research programs administered through the UROP, and will continue working in these labs throughout the following academic year.
C. Sally Ride Science Festival. This program is aimed at enhancing science exposure for girls in grades 5 though 8, by providing an opportunity to participate in one-day events that are held at university campuses across the country. The festival includes workshops for parents and teachers, hands-on science exhibits and an introduction to a community of scientists with the goal of fostering an interest in a career in science. The Sally Ride Science Festival is organized by the University of Michigan Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program.
