U-M and BGSU Faculty Learning Community

The Life Sciences Learning Community (LSLC) meets five times during the summer and once each month throughout the academic year. The goals of the LSLC include:

  1. Introducing new and future faculty members to methods of active learning.
  2. Preparing for the implementation of new pedagogical approaches in an upcoming course.
  3. Providing a support network to assist with an ongoing course.

Topics covered in the LSLC include:

  1. Preparing for the first day of class.
  2. Designing a syllabus
  3. Integrated course design (how to include learning goals, activities and methods of assessment when developing a course).

Participants are usually sent one or two short pedagogical papers prior to each session to provide background for particular topics. Three facilitators lead the discussion, but the LSLC practices the principles of active learning; all participants are expected to directly participate in the ongoing discussions, to share their experiences and ideas that relate to teaching and learning.

The LSLC is open to faculty members, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students. For further information contact Dr. Daniel Klionsky (klionsky@umich.edu).
